Go To The Beach
A week without a big idea.
A data integrity issue at work.
My time was limited and my brain was filled with distractions.
How was I going to make time to write?
But finally, a gap in my schedule.
A chance to go for a long walk, listen to a podcast, and brainstorm some ideas alone in peace.
But then, as I kiss my wife and tell her I’ll be back in an hour, she says she wants to go to the beach and catch the sunset.
Being the good (maybe not so modest) husband that I am, I knew she meant we wanted to go to the beach.
So I put my walk on hold and off we went. An easy 30-minute drive from where we live.
We settled into our beach chairs, positioning them at just the right angle to catch the rays beaming off the clouds.
Just as I got comfortable, the fact I had nothing to write about crept back up in my head.
As I was starting to feel the time slipping away, it hit me.
My life was giving me the answer — the lesson.
So what was it?
Go to the beach.
I’m kidding. But barely.
Go to your beach.
See, the beach for my wife and I is special.
It’s a calming environment. It’s where we had our wedding. It’s a safe haven.
I bet you have a place like that.
Or maybe it’s an activity.
Maybe you feel the most mental clarity when you are on the tennis court, at your church, or out in nature.
Whatever that thing or that place is for you, go there when you need to.
Don’t put it off because some responsibility in your life is telling you that you can’t.
Look, I’m reasonable. I know you have things to do and responsibilities to take care of.
But we all need some solace too. A moment or a couple of hours to just be.
So when you’re feeling lost or unclear or overwhelmed…Go to your beach.
You deserve it.
